Giant’s Causeway is a remarkable coastal formation on the north coast of County Antrim, Northern Ireland, where roughly 40,000 interlocking basalt columns extend from the foot of the cliffs into the sea. Most columns have a distinctive polygonal shape, created as layers of molten basalt cooled and contracted. The site forms part of the Giant’s Causeway and Causeway Coast UNESCO World Heritage Site and is protected as an important geological landscape. Clifftop paths provide views along the rugged coast, while trails descend toward the stone formations and nearby bays.

The Causeway is closely connected with one of Northern Ireland’s best-known legends. According to folklore, the Irish giant Finn McCool built the causeway across the sea to confront the Scottish giant Benandonner. The story has helped shape the cultural identity of the site, while scientific research provides a different explanation for the remarkable columns. The formation has played an important role in the study of geology and volcanic processes. The National Trust manages much of the site and maintains paths, conservation measures, and visitor facilities.

The coastline around the Causeway contains several distinctive geological features beyond the main columns. The Grand Causeway is the largest of three principal rocky outcrops, while the nearby Giant’s Organ consists of tall basalt columns rising along the cliff. The surrounding Causeway Coast includes sea cliffs, rocky headlands, caves, bays, and exposed layers of ancient lava flows. Walking routes allow visitors to approach the columns from different directions, with clifftop sections providing broader views and lower paths reaching the shoreline. The area also supports colonies of seabirds along the coastal cliffs.

The visitor experience includes an interpretation center explaining the geology, folklore, and natural history of the World Heritage Site. The surrounding Causeway Coast is also associated with nearby attractions such as Dunluce Castle, Bushmills, and the coastal landscapes around Benbane Head. A lesser-known detail is that the basalt columns continue beneath the sea and are part of a much larger volcanic landscape formed during the opening of the North Atlantic. The regularity of the columns, created naturally through cooling and contraction of lava, has made Giant’s Causeway an important reference site in the study of columnar basalt.
