Sturgis is a small city in western South Dakota, positioned on the northern edge of the Black Hills where forested mountains meet the open Great Plains. The city is surrounded by ponderosa pine hills, rocky ridges, and broad prairie landscapes, with Bear Butte rising prominently to the northeast. Sturgis serves as a gateway to the northern Black Hills and provides access to scenic roads, hiking areas, and nearby communities such as Deadwood and Spearfish. Its downtown retains the practical character of a regional town while its identity is strongly connected to motorcycle culture.

The Lakota people have longstanding cultural connections to the Black Hills and Bear Butte, a prominent sacred site northeast of Sturgis. The surrounding landscape also reflects later traditions of ranching, mining, timber harvesting, and military activity. Fort Meade, established near the city, played an important role in the area's development and now forms part of the Fort Meade Recreation Area. The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame preserves motorcycles and memorabilia, documenting the importance of motorcycling to the community and the wider cultural identity associated with the city.

Bear Butte is one of the area's most recognizable natural landmarks, rising above the prairie with views across the northern Black Hills. Nearby Black Hills National Forest provides opportunities for hiking, camping, fishing, horseback riding, and wildlife observation, while the Centennial Trail passes through the surrounding region. Sturgis is also close to the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway, which follows a narrow limestone canyon lined with forests, cliffs, waterfalls, and streams. The surrounding Black Hills landscape supports elk, deer, mountain goats, wild turkeys, and other wildlife.

Sturgis has a food culture shaped by South Dakota ranching and agriculture, with beef, buffalo, potatoes, grains, and locally produced baked goods common in the region. During the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the city’s population expands dramatically, and restaurants, bars, campgrounds, and other businesses accommodate large numbers of motorcycle travelers. Outside the rally season, the community is considerably quieter and functions as a base for exploring the Black Hills. A distinctive detail is the city's close relationship with motorcycling, which has influenced local businesses, museums, public events, and the appearance of the downtown area.
