Peru is a country that tells its story through stone, soil, and flavor. From the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu to the bustling food markets of Lima, every region reveals a different chapter of its heritage. One of the country’s most iconic sites, Machu Picchu, continues to draw visitors from around the world to see its stone terraces and cloud-kissed scenery, as well as the sense of wonder that accompanies the journey there. Many arrive via the Inca Trail, a multi-day hike passing through Andean peaks, ancient sites, and cloud forests before reaching the Sun Gate at sunrise. But Peru’s archaeological depth extends beyond this. In the north, the massive adobe city of Chan Chan once housed thousands of people in the pre-Inca Chimú empire, while the Nazca Lines, the giant geoglyphs etched into desert plains, still puzzle researchers to this day.

In the Amazon basin, cities like Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado offer access to river journeys, wildlife reserves, and Indigenous communities. Travelers can spot pink river dolphins, learn about ayahuasca ceremonies from local guides, or stay in jungle lodges surrounded by towering ceiba trees. The region is also home to Manu National Park, one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, where biologists continue to discover new species. Despite its ancient legacy, Peru remains full of surprises for those willing to look beyond the well-trodden path.

Cusco
Cusco
Cusco once served as the heart of the Inca Empire, and that legacy still shapes every corner of the city even as it serves as a gateway to Machu Picchu. Outside the historic center, the ruins of Sacsayhuamán overlook the city from a nearby hilltop. This ceremonial complex is best known for its massive zigzag stone walls, some weighing over 100 tons. During the Inti Raymi festival in June, thousands gather here to reenact ancient Andean rituals.

Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu is a story carved into stone, perched nearly 2,500 meters above sea level in the cloud forests of southern Peru. Built in the 15th century and later abandoned, this Inca citadel was unknown to the outside world until 1911, when explorer Hiram Bingham brought it to international attention. Today, it remains remarkably well-preserved, with more than 150 stone structures, terraced fields, ceremonial fountains, and temples aligned with astronomical events.
