Kananaskis, located in the foothills and front ranges of the Canadian Rockies in Alberta, is a vast region celebrated for its rugged mountains, alpine lakes, and outdoor recreation opportunities. Unlike nearby Banff or Jasper, Kananaskis is less developed and offers a quieter, more wilderness-focused experience while still being easily accessible from Calgary. The area takes its name from the Kananaskis River, which flows through the valleys and supports diverse ecosystems and wildlife, including elk, moose, bears, and bighorn sheep.

Kananaskis Country is not a single park but a collection of provincial parks, wildland areas, and recreation zones, including Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, Spray Valley, and Bow Valley. Popular activities include hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, skiing at Nakiska Ski Area, and camping. The region is also renowned for its scenic drives, such as the Kananaskis Trail, which winds past turquoise lakes, jagged peaks, and alpine meadows. In winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing draw visitors seeking a quieter alternative to the busier national parks.

Known as “Alberta’s Mountain Playground,” Kananaskis is both a local favorite and a destination for those wanting to explore Canada’s Rockies in a more off-the-beaten-path setting.
