Tucked between Jordan's sandstone cliffs in the southwestern desert, Petra was carved directly into rose-colored rock more than 2,000 years ago. Visitors approaching through the narrow gorge known as the Siq are rewarded with their first glimpse of Al-Khazneh, the Treasury, a towering facade that seems to appear from another world.

While the Treasury often steals the spotlight, Petra is much larger than most expect. The city stretches over 100 square miles and includes an amphitheater, royal tombs, temples, and winding paths leading to high lookouts like the Monastery (Ad-Deir). Hikers who venture up the 800 rock-cut steps to reach it are greeted with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and plateaus.

Beyond its monumental architecture, Petra tells the story of a once-thriving civilization that controlled vital trade routes across the Arabian Peninsula. The Nabataeans mastered water engineering, channeling rainwater through an intricate system of dams and cisterns, a necessity for survival in the arid landscape. Evidence of their ingenuity remains visible throughout the site.

Petra takes on an entirely different atmosphere at night. On certain evenings, hundreds of candles light the path through the Siq, leading visitors back to the Treasury, now glowing under the stars. It’s a sensory experience that connects the modern traveler to the mystery of the past.
